The Doctors and staff of Bladen Eye Center are extremely excited to announce the addition of Intense Pulsed Light Therapy for the treatment of dry eye and various eyelid disorders.

IPL is a revolutionary treatment for skin and eyelid inflammation which, in many cases, is the root cause of dry eye. With IPL technology, light pulses penetrate the tissue creating heat and targeting the abnormal vessels that are the root cause of inflammation.

Lumenis IPL is FDA approved and an extremely effective treatment for ocular conditions such as:

  • Chronic dry eye
  • Ocular rosacea
  • Chalazia/hordeola
  • Meibomian gland dysfunction
  • Other inflammatory conditions of the eyelids and surrounding tissues

The IPL treatment is an outpatient procedure that lasts approximately 15 minutes. This natural light-based therapy treats skin and eyelid inflammation resulting in overall relief of dry eye symptoms while improving overall skin appearance. Our doctors prescribe a 4 session treatment plan split over an 8 week period of time. During this treatment,  you might experience warm sensations as light is applied to the skin. The results greatly improve your comfort and cosmesis of the eyes and eyelids. Improvement in signs and symptoms are seen after 2 sessions but the meaningful results occur after the 4th treatment.

“The particular IPL that we have at Bladen Eye Center is about one of only 430 in the US. With it we have designed a protocol that allows us to significantly impact chronic dry eye and rosacea, transforming the lives of patients who are suffering from these debilitating chronic eye conditions." states Dr. Eric Schmidt.

Dr. Schmidt goes on to further say, “ We are one of the few practices in North Carolina to have this revolutionary treatment and we are excited to be able to offer this to our patients. One great side effect, the IPL can minimize wrinkles and rejuvenate your skin!”
