Eating Right and Healthy Life Choices can help prevent the growth of Cataracts

catawareWe have heard it all before….everything in moderation, eat your vegetables, wear your sunscreen and don't make doctors your strangers.  This is all true with preventing Cataracts.

This month The AOA has declared June, the Cataract Awareness Month.  So, let's make you are aware of some simple life changes that can make a world of difference with your vision and keeping cataracts at bay.

Simple changes will bring a major clarity to your vision!

1.     Keep your vices to a minimum

-          Excess drinking can create a number of health risks, one of which is an increased chance of developing cataracts.  So the next time you go to happy hour or a party, remember one is better than two!

-          That pack of Cigarettes-  Research suggests that smoking increases your chances of developing cataracts.  So this is just number 100 why you should not to be smoker.

2.     The sun is beautiful but we must keep our eyes shaded from it’s beauty!

-          UV light speeds up the formation of cataracts, no matter what age.  So the next time you are worried about your child having a pair of good quality sunglasses because they will loose them, invest in a croakie.

-          Your eyes, as your skin, need protection from the UV light. We can't say it enough! Protect your eyes with Polarization.

3.     Regular Annual Eye Exams

Even if your vision is clear, this does not address the disease of your eye.  That is why regular annual eye exams are just as important as your regular physical.  Regular eye exams allow your eye doctor to look for signs of cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, and other vision disorders.  Make your appointment, keep your appointment for clearer, healthier eyes.

4.      Eating healthier –just one more benefit of eating healthier….healthier eyes!

Eating foods high in antioxidants, such as beta-carotene, selenium and vitamin C and E will help ward off Cataracts. So what are those types of food? Foods that involve kale, sweet potatoes, carrots, turnips, spinach, butternut Squash, oranges, just to name a few.
